Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is ready with the release of his next movie, D Company, which is about to hit theatres soon. And while we all know what RGV can do in the gangster genre, given that he's given India some of the finest films in this space with Satya, Company and Sarkar, what intrigued us about D Company was the casting, with the ensemble not featuring a single star. So, we decided to quiz Ramu about it in an exclusive interview, which led him to highlighting why he had also not cast Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in Satya back in 1997 (the film had released in 1998, but the casting process began in 1997). Shedding light on the topic, Ram Gopal Varma said, “Genre films might get a bigger audience if you cast stars, but that's at the expense of not being honest to the film. In Satya, for example in 1997, had Shah Rukh or Salman both played Bhiku Mhatre or Satya's roles, I don't think it would have been the same film. Even if it worked, it might have worked for different reasons since stars work anyway, but, it wouldn't have remained the same film because they'd have looked very different. Both Satya and Bhiku Mhatre looked very believable, I could easily believe these guys lived in the chawls or dirty bylanes, which would've never looked believable had Shah Rukh and Salman played those parts.” Also Read - Malayalam cinema: The new guard takes over!
In Ram Gopal Varma's own words, D Company is supposed to be the most extensive, well-researched gangster movie on the inception and progression of dreaded underworld don and terrorist, Dawood Ibrahim's, mafia ring. It's slated to release on 26th March. Also Read - Prithviraj, happy birthday!
