Social media can be a harsh place and KL Rahul is bearing the brunt of it after yet another duck against England in the third T20I of the five-match series. Rahul was bowled for a duck by a tearing Mark Wood inswinger which disturbed the timber and sent the cricketer packing for a four-ball naught at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

Rahul played down the wrong lineand the ball came back in through the gap between the bat and pad and uprooted the stumps — never a good sight for a batsman, especially one, who has been getting chances ahead of someone.

Following the failure on Tuesday, Rahul now has recorded three ducks in four innings with two coming in this series itself. And, Twitter wasn’t pleased with the continuous failings and demanded him to be dropped in favour of Suryakumar Yadav.

“He is never ever a match winner. He is in the team bcz of Godfather Coach & Kohlis special buddy. Mark this tweet.#INDvENG,” wrote an user named Krushna, suggesting Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri’s favouritism towards the Karnataka opener.

A user named Rajesh Menon suggested improvement in Rahul’s form with a cheeky tweet.

However, a lot of netizens came in support of Rahul, especially after he was backed by senior and veteran players.

Rahul’s drop off in form comes after a fair stint in the middle-order for India and another successful Indian Premier League (IPL) last year, where he scored 670 runs from 14 games for Kings XI Punjab at an average of 55.83. For India, prior to the drop off, Rahul scored 76 in the second ODI at Sydney and 51 in the first T20I at Canberra, where he opened the batting.

Rahul’s form also meant Shikhar Dhawan had no place in the XI as Kohli suggested that Rahul and Rohit Sharma will be India’s two openers when available. However, following Rahul’s failings, it remains to be seen what the team management does in the remaining two ODIs against England.
