Hillsdale College Receives Perfect Score from Forbes for Financial Health

Only A+ score in Michigan, among only 38 perfect scores in the nation

HILLSDALE, Mich., March 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Hillsdale College received a perfect A+ rating from Forbes in its recent College Financial Health Grades. This is the second year in a row that Hillsdale College has received a perfect, 4.50 "Financial GPA." Of the 921 colleges in the United States ranked by Forbes, 38 schools received a 4.50 Financial GPA. Among these, Hillsdale College is the only school in Michigan and the only school to reject all federal and state taxpayer-subsidized funding.

"Because Hillsdale diversifies its revenue sources and rejects government funding, it can offer the course of study that it believes to be best for its students," said Patrick Flannery, vice president for finance and treasurer of Hillsdale College. "The College is proof that education does not need to be subsidized by the government to succeed. We are grateful to the many donors, parents, and students who place their trust in us."

The Forbes report analyzed records for 921 private colleges throughout the United States with an enrollment of 500 students or more. The rankings were drawn from the National Center for Education Statistics database, which focused on endowment assets, liquidity of assets, tuition revenue as percentage of total revenue, return on assets, admissions yield, freshman grant aid, instruction expenses, and overall operational soundness. In the Forbes ranking, Hillsdale College was given an A+ and was the only institution of higher education in Michigan to receive a perfect score.

In Forbes' Top Colleges 2019 listing, Hillsdale College was ranked 195th out of 650 top universities in the country and was ranked 137th in private colleges, 72nd in liberal arts universities, and 33rd in the Midwest. Forbes did not release a 2020 Top Colleges listing.

  • Griddy to Cancel Texas Power Bills If Customers Don’t Sue

    (Bloomberg) -- Griddy Energy LLC has one final deal for Texans before the power seller shuts down for good: if its 29,000 former customers agree not to sue, the company will cancel electric bills that were about 300 times normal amid last month’s winter storm.On its first day in bankruptcy court, Griddy lawyers outlined a plan to liquidate, settle with customers and, possibly, arrange lawsuits against those that the company blames for its collapse. The company also won court permission to pay its remaining employees and other routine bills while the Chapter 11 case goes forward.U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Marvin Isgur called Griddy’s bankruptcy proposal “unique and really unprecedented.” Isgur, who has overseen some of the biggest corporate restructurings filed in recent years, pushed Griddy to ensure that customers understand how the bankruptcy case will affect their huge electric bills after first criticizing Griddy’s attempt to pay one of its lenders as the case goes forward.Customers face an average bill of about $1,100 because of the winter storm that sent power prices surging, Isgur said. If Griddy wants to cancel those charges in exchange for customers dropping potential lawsuits, the company must clearly let people know that before they vote on the proposal, Isgur said. Customers will be considered creditors who have a right to vote on the liquidation plan before Isgur decides whether to approve it.“This is a difficult case,” Isgur said. “I really am worried that we handle it properly.”Surging PricesGriddy filed for bankruptcy on Monday, blaming its woes on the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which runs the state’s power grid. During the storm, Ercot, as it is known, pushed up wholesale power prices dramatically under rules Texas lawmakers have adopted that deregulated much of the state’s electric industry over the course of several decades. Griddy was barred from the state’s power markets in late February after failing to make a payment.Griddy charged wholesale prices instead of fixed ones. Knowing that rate structure would mean massive bills for its customers as power prices climbed, the company made the unusual move of pleading with them to switch to another provider in mid-February. Some customers who didn’t switch in time were stuck with bills for thousands of dollars.Isgur told the main lawyer suing Griddy on behalf of customers that the company deserves some credit for making that effort.“I’m not seeing someone here that set out to do something wrong,” Isgur said of the company. “But I may have someone here who may have done something wrong. It is way too early to make that determination.”Griddy will try to win final approval for its liquidation plan from Isgur within 85 days, Robin Spigel of Baker Botts said in court on behalf of the power company.One option being considered is to hire an administrator who would decide whether to file lawsuits to try to collect money that would go to Griddy’s creditors, Spigel said.The case is Griddy Energy LLC, 21-30923, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas (Houston).     (Bloomberg) -- Production at U.S. manufacturers unexpectedly declined in February, representing a pause in recent momentum as factories were beset by severe winter weather and supply-chain challenges.The 3.1% decrease in output was the first since April and followed an upwardly revised 1.2% gain in January, according to Federal Reserve data Tuesday. That was worse than all estimates in a Bloomberg survey of economists. The median forecast called for a 0.2% rise.Excluding the effects of inclement weather, factory production would have fallen about 0.5% in February, the Fed said in a statement.Total industrial production, which also includes mines and utilities, dropped 2.2% in February after an upwardly revised 1.1% increase a month earlier.“We likely will see at least a partial reversal of the February changes in March given expected normalization in the weather and over time we believe industrial production will keep trending higher as the recovery continues,” Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan Chase & Co., said in a note.Total industrial output reflected a 7.4% surge at utilities. That was the largest advance since March 2017 and driven by increased demand for heating. The bitter cold weather also resulted in blackouts in Texas and disrupted production at refineries.While manufacturers continue to battle supply shortages and shipping challenges, tailwinds for producers include lean business inventories, steady demand from consumers and solid capital spending.The Fed’s index of manufacturing output is 4% below where it was a year ago. The March data will offer a clearer read on the progress of American manufacturing, given other gauges of activity have largely been upbeat.     (Bloomberg) -- Government relief programs and lenders’ forbearance have kept U.S. small businesses from defaulting on their debt en masse as revenue slumped during the pandemic crisis, according to a new analysis.Among small firms nationwide, 18.3% of business payments were past due in January, a modest increase from 17.7% in February 2020, the Urban Institute said in a report using Dun & Bradstreet data. Somewhat more affected were two big cities on the coasts, New York and San Francisco, which saw increases of 2.5 and 4.3 percentage points, respectively.For now, businesses are sitting on enough cash to pay their bills. Cash balances were up as much as 41% at their peak in late August, as the federal Paycheck Protection Program pumped out forgivable loans to keep small firms afloat. Those balances were still up by 35% through late September, according to data from the JPMorgan Chase Institute.     (Bloomberg) -- Saudi Arabia recently paid around $50 million of extra fees to banks on the record-breaking listing of state oil company Aramco, with most of the cash going to local underwriters after Wall Street firms were sidelined, people familiar with the matter said.The discretionary incentive fee -- doled out to reward banks for the amount of orders they brought in -- was transferred to arrangers of the 2019 share sale in the last couple months, according to the people. The payments totalled about 0.25% of the money raised from institutional investors, the people said, asking not to be identified because the information is private.The additional money brings the sum that the kingdom paid to the banks on the $29.4 billion initial public offering to just over $100 million, a tiny figure sum by global standards. T-Mobile US Inc. paid roughly twice that amount last year for a share sale that was about half the size of the Aramco offering, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.It wasn’t immediately clear why it took Saudi Arabia so long after the IPO to pay the final fees. Aramco declined to comment.Saudi Arabia initially paid a combined $64 million in base fees to the IPO arrangers, with the top foreign banks on the deal getting about 13 million riyals ($3.5 million) each, Bloomberg News reported earlier. The kingdom didn’t need the Wall Street firms’ international networks after it scrapped roadshows outside the Middle East, turning instead to local retail buyers and wealthy families to shore up the deal.The world’s biggest investment banks spent several years building up their Saudi presence in the hopes of winning a role on the Aramco IPO, which Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman had said would value the company at $2 trillion.     China's electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD is hiring engineers for its first overseas battery plant in Europe, the company backed by Warren Buffett said on Wednesday, as it pushes to become an EV parts supplier.     (Bloomberg) -- Brilliant Energy LLC filed for bankruptcy in the Southern District of Texas, adding to a growing list of companies that have stumbled after power outages caused by a winter freeze in February.The Chapter 7 filing signals an intent to liquidate the business while under court protection. The electricity provider has estimated liabilities of $50 million to $100 million compared with assets of $10 million to $50 million, according to its bankruptcy petition.At their peak, the unprecedented power outages in Texas left four million homes and businesses without heat, light and in some cases water as a rare and powerful winter storm gripped the region, causing as much as $129 billion in economic losses. Dozens of people died in the cold.Brilliant Energy is at least the fourth firm to seek bankruptcy protection in the wake of the Texas freeze, underscoring the crushing financial pressure the outages have put on power companies in the state. The market faces a more-than $3 billion shortfall as over a dozen companies can’t pay their bills.Valuable AssetsDTE Energy Trading, a creditor in the case, claims in court papers that Brilliant has been in default on certain power contracts since 2017 and owed DTE about $15 million prior to last month’s freeze. The wholesale electricity seller says it’s now owed some $60 million and has asked Brilliant’s bankruptcy judge to intervene before “irreparable harm” befalls the company’s most valuable assets -- its customer contracts.DTE is asking for a court-appointed trustee to take control of Brilliant and sell the customer contracts. Without it, the state’s grid operator may transfer the contracts to another electricity provider, destroying what value is left in the company and potentially foisting higher power bills on consumers, DTE argues in court papers.The contracts may be worth as much as $12 million, according to DTE. An emergency hearing is set for Wednesday afternoon.“The value of those customer contracts now is at risk of being lost as a result of this Chapter 7 filing and management’s precipitous actions,” lawyers for the energy wholesaler wrote in court papers. DTE claims it was in talks about selling the contracts prior to the filing, but Brilliant “abruptly ended those negotiations, sent the debtor’s employees home, and then filed the instant Chapter 7 case.”Brilliant Energy’s bankruptcy lawyer declined to comment.“We will work with the bankruptcy court to ensure the best outcome for DTE stakeholders,” a representative for DTE said in emailed comments. The company will disclose its energy trading unit’s results in its quarterly report and expects on-target performance for the period, the representative said.
