Coronavirus Lockdown 2021 in India Live Updates: Indore, Bhopal, Surat, Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Vadodara – what’s common in all these cities? All of these will see the night curfew from today. As local authorities scramble for micro-lockdowns to curb the spread of the coronavirus, a crucial meeting is scheduled between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Ministers of various states to discuss the current situation of corona pandemic in India. According to the Indian Express, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her counterpart from Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel have decided to skip the key meet. No reason has been conveyed so far. Today’s numbers have confirmed what every health expert was dreading – the second wave of coronavirus pandemic. The Centre says that the second wave of Covid-19 infections is being particularly seen in Maharashtra. However, Maharashtra‘s State Surveillance Office Dr Pradip Awate told the Indian Express on March 16 that it is in fact true that the entire nation is experiencing the second wave. While local authorities in various states are enforcing stringent measures, all eyes will be on the key meet to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. During the virtual discussion with all Chief Ministers, PM is supposed to take stock of the situation in terms of new infections and the status of the vaccination drive.

Maharashtra is has reported over 15,000 cases on a daily basis in March. State capital Mumbai is already in the danger zone with over 1,000 new infections being recorded on daily basis. Pune has also seen the surge. Nagpur became the first city to impose a total lockdown in 2021. The fact remains that while opening up of the economic activities may have helped the businesses in covering up the losses of 2020, the ground reality is that lack of mask discipline and zero social distancing have put people in the dangerous zone of high infection groups. Apart from the local factors, the new cases of blood-clotting due to the AstraZeneca vaccine may also be discussed in the meeting between the PM and Chief Ministers.

With global powers jostling for their share of corona vaccine stockpile, here’s our live blog with all the freshest, official developments on corona lockdowns, curfews and other related news.

Coronavirus Lockdown 2021 Live: Japan Inc to offer lowest pay rises in 8 years as pandemic bites

Japanese companies are set to offer the lowest wage increases in eight years as labour talks wrap up on Wednesday, in a sign the COVID-19 pandemic is putting an end to the benefits brought on by former premier Shinzo Abe's stimulus policies. Over the past seven years, major firms have offered pay rises of 2% or more in annual "shunto" spring wage negotiations, in a nod to government efforts to eradicate two decades of grinding deflation. Abe's policies, dubbed "Abenomics", targeted wages among other reforms to help reflate the economy. The country's chronic labour shortage from a rapidly ageing population also prodded companies to offer higher salaries to lure talent. But the coronavirus pandemic has dealt a blow particularly to service-sector firms such as restaurants, transportation, hotels, leisure and tourism, forcing them to prioritise job security over annual base pay increases, analysts say. - Reuters
