Police ID man shot, killed in northern NM

Mar. 16—SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico State Police have identified a man killed in a shooting at a residence in Chamita last week as 35-year-old Fernando Martinez of Española.

No arrests have been made in the case. However, an NMSP spokesman said agents do have a person, or persons, of interest in the shooting.

Martinez was killed and three others were injured when suspects opened fire on a crowded SUV shortly after midnight March 11 in Chamita, a community 7 miles north of Española.

State Police spokesman Mark Soriano said that day that police detained six people after a standoff at a nearby home.

The shooting took place at a home County Road 56 near House 89A.

Several people in the SUV had been fired upon while the vehicle was on the property and at least four received gunshot wounds. Soriano said a woman and two men were taken to the hospital and Martinez was found dead inside the SUV.

NBC News' Benjy Sarlin notes that many of these conservative policies don't have the support of 50+ Republicans anyway, and the GOP didn't use every tool available to pass them even when they held all three branches of government. The Washington Post's Dave Weigel separately argues that many Democrats may feel conservative courts hold the power on some of these issues, so Republican senators' posturing is irrelevant. Either way, analysts seem to agree with McConnell in his prediction of increased chaos and gridlock. With only 50 seats for each party, more frequent quorum requirements could "get messy quickly," and could lead to bills being passed out of pure spite.     Researchers at the Institut Pasteur are investigating whether a newly-identified coronavirus variant in the Brittany region of France may be more difficult for standard PCR tests to detect, the French health ministry said Tuesday.
