MUMBAI: The school education department’s move on Monday to release a question bank for students of Class 10 and 12 to help preparation, has created quite a stir among students.

Several of them took to social media complaining that the question bank included parts of the syllabus that have been reduced for the upcoming exams.

Students were hopeful that the question bank would help ease their nerves before the HSC and SSC examinations, as they have been out of school for most of the year. The government should have have ensured that the question bank was created meticulously to avoid adding to students’ anxiety.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has announced that the HSC and SSC board examinations are scheduled to begin on April 23 and 29.

After consultations with parents’ groups and teachers, the education department on Monday uploaded on its website a subject-wise question bank for the students.

A student said, “There isn’t a single topic from the textbook that isn’t part of the question bank. How will this help us prepare better? Almost all questions from the textbook are included so how would we know what is important?”

The education department has stated that the question bank is only for practice and it wouldn’t mean that the board exam papers would be set only on the basis of that.

With the pandemic in play, the education department had announced that 25% of the syllabus would be reduced for the upcoming board exams. A teacher from a junior college said several students had reached out to her, “A lot of questions are part of the syllabus that has been reduced for this year. Now the students are confused if we will be tested on it because it is in the question bank.”

An official part of the team who set the question bank said that only a few questions from the omitted syllabus are included.

“Unfortunately, a few short queries have been included in the question bank which were actually omitted. Those can be identified and excluded.

The question bank is not based on the textbook questions but rather what is important from the exam perspective,” said the official.
