Mumbai: Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, known for his high-octane action films, said he had never thought about creating content for OTT. The filmmaker, who is ready to release his John Abraham-Emraan Hashmi protagonist “Mumbai Saga”, claims that his films were made for the big screen only.
‘I’m not working on OTT. I do not even look at the platform. “My focus was on the big screen and on what people sitting in a closed environment will address, people who make an effort to go and watch the film,” he told IANS.
For Gupta, shooting “Mumbai Saga” was quite an adventure for him due to the pandemic.
“It was an experience that had never been seen before in my career. There was a lot of uncertainty. At one point, it was like a life-and-death situation, as portions had to be shot and the pandemic reached a climax. We completed the recording of the film in the middle of the peak. We sat on the film for six months after that. But someone had to emerge among the bigger movies, which is why we decided to release the movie. The advantage we have over the other giants is that our budget is not that big. This is a calculated risk. “By coming to the theaters, we may not earn money, but we do not lose money,” he said.
However, he adds that filmmakers like him make an effort to ensure that films get a good theatrical release.
‘People are asking for more screens to open, and we’re all going out. No more than 50 to 60 percent screens have been opened yet and we want to release our movies in as many screens as we can. In a smaller movie, you still can’t do that. But for a film of this format, size and ambition, there is no formality here. We have to release it in a big way, ‘he said.
However, he said it was difficult to predict the footprints from now on. “We have no expectation and no prediction. We do not know how people are going to do it and how many people will come. No one can predict. In Roohi, with every show, more and more people come. It’s not a huge amount of people coming, but it’s a good sign, ‘he said.
