Court rejects Sachin Waze’s plea against arrest

MUMBAI: A special trial court judge on Tuesday rejected a challenge raised by suspended assistant police inspector Sachin Waze to the legality of his arrest without state consent, but allowed his lawyer to remain present during his interrogation, but at a distance and out of earshot, reports Swati Deshpande.
Special judge Prashant Sitre permitted defence advocate Sajal Yadav to “watch the proceeding from a distance or from beyond the glass partition” only when interrogation was by the investigating officer of NIA, and not otherwise. Later, Yadav watched Waze’s questioning from a distance.
Yadav tendered a photocopy of a state notification to plead that Waze’s arrest is unlawful. The court said the plea was “premature” and “can be decided at an appropriate stage”.
