- CAF President Patrice Motsepe outlined that bringing success to Africa in football terms was a main priority as its newly-elected head.
- Motsepe proclaimed that success on the pitch would mean that an African team must win a World Cup in the near future.
- The former Sundowns president encouraged the private sector to get involved in sponsoring tournaments to accelerate success.
Newly-elected CAF President Patrice Motsepe on Tuesday outlined his plans for the future of football on the African continent while emphasising that success on and off the pitch is a priority.
Motsepe was announced as the new president of the soccer organisation on Friday after running as an uncontested candidate following the backing of FIFA.
One of the richest men in Africa, Motsepe is tasked with resurrecting a dysfunctional organisation dogged by corruption and maladministration after the suspension of former president Ahmad Ahmad.
Speaking to journalists in his first public address in South Africa since being appointed, Mostepe outlined that he is aiming to bring a culture of success to an under-performing continent.
"All of these wonderful discussions mean absolutely nothing if we are not successful," Mostepe said.
"We are selling a product and if you look at Mamelodi Sundowns, they are successful. We also need Bafana Bafana to do well and that's also why I am happy that the chairperson of Orlando Pirates is present here, Kaizer Chiefs are also here in attendance.
"Bafana Bafana must also do well, just like every other African country.
"We want during the next World Cup and also future World Cups that African nations compete and it is why it is included in our manifesto that it's part of our plan that an African team must win a World Cup."
Motsepe, who is a successful businessman reportedly worth $2.9 billion, added that businesses would need to be incorporated into sponsoring football across the continent to accelerate its growth and success.
"We need to get the private sector involved in African football. Businesses need to sponsor football tournaments throughout the continent," Mostepe added.
"We need to increase the sponsorship of the African Cup of Nations in a significantly more substantial way. We need to increase the sponsorship for the African Champions League.
"I mean when Sundowns won the Champions League (in 2016) I had to take money out of my own pocket because the money they won was just okay.
"We've also got to get more sponsorships for Cosafa tournaments and for all of the regions.
"In future meetings with all of the 54 national presidents, we will discuss the immediate urgent steps to bring success to Africa. Including what I've just mentioned that we have to address."
