As it is done elsewhere in the world, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Lilong Haoreibi College in association with All Manipur Muslims (Meitei-Pangal) Welfare Association (AMPWA) celebrated the International Women’s Day 2021 on the theme: “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world” in a function held at the College Multipurpose Hall.

A debate competition on the topic: ‘Women in leadership can only bring victory on War against Drugs’ was also organised as a part of the observance. The topic was selected slightly different from the main theme of the IWD 2021 keeping in view that Lilong has also been considered as one of the focussed areas on drug related issues.

In the competition, B A 3rd Semester student Ms. Sheikh Zakriya Banu stood first, B A 5th semester student Khullakpam Husseni stood second and B Voc. 1st semester student Nishar Ahmed stood third positions. Cash awards along with citations were distributed to the winners and all other participants in the competition.

Apart from this, as a part of encouragement to women’s participation in such an academic exercise, the proprietor of Public Hospitals and Research Institute Mr. Md. Azad Khan also presented gift hampers to all the girl students who participated in the competition irrespective of winning the prizes.

Celebrating the women’s participation in social issues and people’s representations, the lone candidate from amongst the girl students Ms. Mm. Rukeiya who has been elected recently in the students’ union election was also felicitated with simple gifts. The head of the department of zoology at Lilong Haoreibi College Dr. Shantibala Devi presided over the IWD 2021 Celebrations and Assistant Professor of the College Dr. Reshma Khatoon attended as the Guest of honour.

Retired IAS officer A. R. Khan who is also the president of the All Manipur Muslims (Meitei-Pangal) Welfare Association (AMPWA) graced the function as Chief Guest and the Central Executive Council Member of the Association M.A. Sattar, IAS (retd.) attended as one of the special Guests.

Giving his key note address of the observance, the Principal of the College Dr. Raheijuddin Sheikh reiterated the Muslim girls in Manipur are still lagging behind in educational, economic and social status, as compared to their counterparts in any other communities and there is still a dire need of honouring them by recognition of their contributions in any fields.

Focusing on the theme of the observance, he also stated that women's full and effective participation and decision-making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, and the flagship generation equality campaign, which calls for women’s right to decision-making in all areas of life, equal pay, equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, an end all forms of violence against women and girls, and health-care services that respond to their needs.

He also emphasized that women stand at the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis, as health care workers, caregivers, innovators, community organizers and as some of the most exemplary and effective national leaders in combating the pandemic. Women leaders and women’s organizations have demonstrated their skills, knowledge and networks to effectively lead in COVID-19 response and recovery efforts.

Today there is more acceptance than ever before that women bring different experiences, perspectives and skills to the table, and make irreplaceable contributions to decisions, policies and laws that work better for all, he added.
