New Zealand fixed broadband usage up 37% after first lockdown

Tuesday 16 March 2021 | 15:22 CET | News
The first Covid-19 lockdown imposed by New Zealand's government resulted in an unprecedented surge in fixed broadband usage, according to Commerce Commission data updated to the end of June 2020. Average fixed broadband usage surged to 284GB a month in the year to June 2020, up 37 percent from the year-earlier average of 207GB a month. "Our 2020 monitoring report includes the first COVID-19 lockdown period and it shows that changes in the way Kiwis worked, learned and played led to significant growth in fixed broadband usage," said Telecommunications Commissioner Tristan Gilbertson.
