Despite being one of the tourist attractions in Anjuna village, the lake near the Anjuna panchayat is lying in neglected condition. Fountains, streetlights are not working and dirty water is turning into a breeding site for vector
borne diseases.
It may be recalled that the lake was earlier renovated and beautified by the Water Resources Department in 2013 at a cost of Rs 1.8 crores wherein the entire area was beautified with streetlights, chairs, fountains in the pond and was considered as one of the tourist attractions. However over a period of time the pond has gone from bad to worse due to lack of maintenance.
The colour of the lake water has turned into greenish colour and locals claim it has been turning into a breeding site for mosquitoes. Since fountains installed in the lake have not been working
hence there is hardly any movement in the lake water. Chairs are broken, streetlights not working and during evening and night time miscreants can be seen creating nuisance.
A local informed that “the lake was once an attraction however over a period of time it has been neglected and concerned authorities have failed to look into
the issue”.
“Streetlights are not working in the evening as a result miscreants are using this place to create nuisance. Even fountains which were installed are not working” informed Ramesh Naik.
The pond is currently being maintained by WRD and it is yet to be handed over to the panchayat.
When contacted the sarpanch of Anjuna- Caisua panchayat Savio Almeida said, “We have already written a letter to the Water Resources Department on the issue and have also informed them that the fountain in the pond near the Panchayat and also the streetlights are not working”.
