The Asia-Pacific market, including Japan, saw very little movement of the traditional PC market in 2020, the technology analyst firm IDC says, adding that there was only a 0.3% increase year-on-year to take the total units shipped to 103.8 million.

Desktops, workstations and notebooks come within IDC's definition of traditional PCs.

The company said shipments were expected to grown by 8% in 2021 due to the strong demand and easing in supply shortages.

The year of the pandemic was good for only one section of the traditional PC market: notebooks. Shipments of this category grew by 12.4%, IDC said, to reach 65.8 million units. Desktops went the other way, with a 15.6% decline.

“A PC has become a necessity during the pandemic," said Jennifer Kwan, market analyst for Client Devices research at IDC Asia/Pacific.

"While the demand was strong, constraints on LCD panels and integrated circuits affected PC shipments across the world. The negative impact was felt also in the Asia/Pacific* region, leaving orders unfulfilled.”

Consumer shipments were up by 9.2%, reaching 49.7 million units and notebook sales grew in all countries except for Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

IDC said the education and consumers segments would remain the main drivers for growth in 2021.

“Despite the COVID-19 vaccination programs under way, many restrictions are likely to persist throughout the year, which is expected to continue to drive spending on technology from both businesses and consumers,” said Maciek Gornicki, senior research manager for Client Devices research at IDC Asia/Pacific.
