March 16, 2012: After accomplishing almost every record a batsman can set, cricket great, Sachin Tendulkar scored his 100th international ton. According to the Master Blaster, it was his toughest hundred. The milestone, which has by far not been achieved by any cricketer across continents, came up playing for the Asia Cup against Bangladesh. In his over two decade long glorious career, no other expectation surpassed the hype surrounding his 100th international century. It took longer than expected, Tendulkar was stranded from the mark for over a year.
The fans expected Tendulkar to reach the three-figure mark every occasion he came out to bat and hence, the journey was historic. Tendulkar’s 100th century at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium had gone in vain as India lost to Bangladesh. However, he relieved himself of the burden for undoubtedly the most anticipated cricket milestone ever. With that, Tendulkar became the first batsman in the world of cricket to score the ton of tons.
The pressure to score a ton was such that he played 138 balls in the game and finished with 114 runs off 147 balls. He set a benchmark unlikely to be outdone in his lifetime. Since his announcement at the global stage at the age of 16 in 1989, Tendulkar has been compared to the top batsmen of his era including the likes of Brian Lara and Inzamam-ul-Haq. Many cricket experts have compared his style to Australian great Donald Bradman.
Almost nineyears after reaching the milestone, Tendulkar remains the sole owner of the record. He holds other major batting records, including most runs and centuries in five-day tests as well as one-day internationals. In his message for youngsters after his 100th hundred, Tendulkar urged them to follow their dreams as he felt dreams do come true.
He had said after achieving the milestone, “When I got my 99th hundred against South Africa in the World Cup, no one spoke about my 100th hundred. I wish I could do that at will. Scoring hundreds is not easy. It doesn't come as and when you want. I have experienced that even after scoring 99 hundreds. The 100th hundred was not that easy. Possibly, the toughest one."
