Karnataka: Girl kills self after sister elopes; mother in hosp after suicide bid

A tragic end: The suicide victim’s mother drank the poison from the same bottle her daughter had used
HAVERI: Despairing of her hopes of a marriage, a 17-year-old girl whose sister eloped with her lover, decided to end her life in Byadagi taluk in Haveri.
Left depressed by the desertion of one daughter and the death of the other, the mother attempted suicide soon after. However, her attempt to end her life did not succeed, and she was admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Hubballi.
The FIR states that 17-year-old Shweta Yattinamani, a resident of Tadasa village in Byadagi, killed herself by drinking poison after her elder sister Anita eloped with her neighbour. Shwetha was convinced that her marriage prospects were bleak given her sister’s actions, and took the extreme step.
Shweta’s mother Manjavva, 52, allegedly drank the remaining poison in the bottle that the former had used.
She survived the attempt and is currently undergoing treatment at KIMS in Hubballi. Manjavva’s husband Mallappa Yattinamani was reportedly out of the home when his daughter and wife drank poison.
“The couple had four daughters, two of whom had been married already. Theirs was a poor family but both Mallappa and Manjavva had dreams of marrying their younger daughters. While Malappa was searching for a groom for Anita, she fell in love with a neighbour, Mahesh, an orphan, with whom she subsequently ran away. We do not know where the two of them are now,” said Dileep, a resident of Tadasa, well-acquainted with the Yattainamani family.
Mallappa said that he tried to convince Anita against eloping with Mahesh, but she did not heed his counsel. “My wife only drank a small amount of the poison and luckily survived. Doctors inform me that she is on the road to recovery,” he said.
