With death rate low, lockdown is not option: Maharashta Health Minister

The Maharashtra Health Department on Monday reported 15,051 new Covid cases, which is 1,559 lower than Sunday’s figure of 16,620 cases. The state has 1,30,547 active cases.

State Health Minister, Rajesh Tope on Monday afternoon said the incidence of infection was increasing but the death rate was still lower. In such a situation lockdown is not an option, but the restrictions would be further tightened, 

The vaccination campaign in the state has been accelerated and at least 1.5 lakh people are being vaccinated every day. There was no shortage of vaccines and efforts were being made to increase the number of vaccinations in private and government hospitals, he said. 

The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of the State Health Department in a media bulletin said that 10,671 patients were discharged on Monday, taking the number of fully discharged patients to 21.44 lakh. 

The recovery rate in the state is 92.07 per cent and 48 Covid-19 deaths were reported. The case fatality rate iis 2.27 per cent. Currently, 6.23 lakh people are in home quarantine and 6,114 people are in institutional quarantine.

The Health Minister also said 85 per cent of infected patients in the state did not have symptoms. Therefore, most of them have been advised home quarantine. As a result, there is currently no shortage of hospital beds.

Pune district accounted for 26,468 cases, followed by Nagpur at 18,114, Mumbai city is on the third position with 13,309 and Thane at fourth position with 12,680. 

On Saturday (March 13) 1.29 lakh people were vaccinated,taking the total in the state to and since the commencement of the vaccination sessions 28.19 lakh people.
