Every aspiring and veteran YouTube creator knows that Canon EOS M50 is one of the best cameras for clicking photos and live streaming. However, Canon recently came out with an upgrade of the same camera dubbed the M50 Mark II. And right off the bat, there are some interesting things to notice about it.
First off, it looks the same as the previous generation. The button layout, body construction and everything else is quite similar to M50. Secondly, the Mark II is only slightly more expensive than its predecessor M50. I mean, M50 is a great camera, but why’d Canon release an upgrade for the same at an almost similar price point?
Well, I spent a good amount of time with the new Canon camera to find out the truth about it and here’s everything you need to know about the EOS M50 Mark II.
Canon EOS M50 Mark II Review
The EOS M50 Mark II will feel very similar to M50 owners. It feels almost similar in your hands. The size and the weight of the MK II will remind you of its predecessor. One major difference here is the addition of white colour, which looks super awesome. But we only got the black version for a review as the white colour is only available internationally.
In terms of image and video quality, the Canon EOS M50 Mark II shines through and through. The photos from the 24 MP image sensor have good colour reproduction and details in them. Video quality is also pretty decent. The camera can shoot in full HD resolution at 24, 30 and 60 FPS, respectively.
But for shooting in UHD, the MK II is limited to just 24 FPS. While in 4k, it also introduces a “crop” which zooms in your image a little bit when you switch. Furthermore, it loses the dual-pixel autofocus in 4k mode, which in turn becomes a contrast-based focus mode. In my case, it worked fine, but if you’re shooting in places with a combination of light and shadows, it could become an issue.
All of it is to say that the MK II works exactly like the M50 in terms of photo and video quality. What separates these two cameras are some quality of life changes. For example, the MK II features the ability to record using the touch screen, but there is no such feature in M50. It could be a game-changer for people who record by themselves.
Another great upgrade is the addition of a micro HDMI port, making the video feed to the screen very clean. The quality of such a video feed also looks great.
MK II also comes with a feature for YouTubers that enables them to live stream wirelessly on their channel. It is a feature that we couldn’t test as it’s for YouTube creators only with at least 1,000 subscribers, but online several creators have shows how it’s done, and overall it looks like a pretty handy feature.
The new Canon camera also comes with a feature called eye detection. It locks the camera onto the subject’s eyes, which makes it great for shooting a solo person.
Overall it is a great camera that shoots in Full HD, has dual pixel autofocus and produces great colour. That’s all the features a creator need in 2021 to get started and get going. If you’re a solo creator, I highly recommend this camera.
