The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mini auction, which threw several surprises, had one more as its governing council announced that none of the franchises will be playing at their home grounds.
After the Chennai auction last month, which saw the franchises opt for new faces and releasing veterans from their squads, many fans were placed in frenzy. Among the released players is former India cricketer, Harbhajan Singh. He was released by his previous franchise Chennai Super Kings and the spin ace was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) this season.
While the veteran off-spinner is happy to join his new franchise, however, he now has a ‘small regret’ that his side will not be playing any league fixtures at their home turf – the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. As mentioned earlier, the decision was made by the IPL governing council.
Speaking in a Star Sports interview, Singh said that he would’ve been happier if he had an opportunity to play the Eden Gardens, as the venue is a ‘special ground’ for him. “I have very good memories from Eden – Test, ODI – whatever cricket I have played there, even the two titles we had won there for the Mumbai Indians,”Singh said.
On the other hand, Singh, who only features in the IPL, is excited to be back in the field and is feeling good that the tournament is being held in India.
“Whether the match is in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai or Mumbai, I am feeling good that the IPL is happening in India,”Singh said and added that as a player, he is”looking forward to it.”In the interview, he also mentioned that the tournament is the one everyone waits for. And for a player like him, who only plays in the IPL, “the desire to play is going to get fulfilled.”
He also said that he’s been associated with the teams who have won the IPL championship and that’s a ‘specialty.’
