Browsing social media apps on smartphones makes you more likely to grind your teeth, sleep poorly and suffer from jaw pain, an Israeli study has found.
The study of 600 people by researchers at Tel Aviv University compared the reactions of regular smartphone users with those using so-called “kosher” phones, which are stripped of all apps.
Kosher phones are widely used by Israel’s ultraorthodox Jewish community. Researchers found 24pc of regular smartphone users experienced teeth grinding during the day, compared with just 6pc of those with kosher devices.
The study also reported that 29pc of regular users reported jaw pain, compared with 14pc of kosher phone users.
Kosher phone users also appeared to get much better sleep, with only 20pc complaining of having a fitful night’s rest.
All participants in the study, due to be published in journal Quintessence International, were aged 18-35.
