Need help with Intersection command

Hello Forum,

I am trying to create a mold using a part that was generated using the Intersection command. I drew the

real part I need. Closed the open end/area with a plane and then using the Intersection command came up

with a new part (yellow) that is the core pattern for my mold. I saved the core pattern as a part. Started new drawing to make a "box" around the core pattern so I can make a core box for casting a sand core. But for some reason I cannot

select the core part (Yellow) and make it disappear like I was able to do when I first started this project?

Is it possible to select an Intersection as a part? Is there some way I can save the intersection (yellow)

part to another file as a solid or some other form so it does not show as an Intersection in my drawing tree

but as a real, self contained part?

Hello Forum, Well I was searching for tutorials and found one on the Combine command. That did work. I had to save my 3 piece part (Red, Blue, Yellow) with 2 different file names and suppress one side or the other (Red or Blue) to get it to work. But I was able to subtract my core pattern (Yellow) from the top and bottom core boxes and get a perfect cavity. I still would like to know if you can save an intersection as a solid or some other format on its own, with no reference to the original intersection command parts? Anyone know the answer to this question? Thanks.

  Once you have the bodies you want, you can select the body and "insert into new part".

    Can you explain this a little further for me? My original challenge was that I drew a casting part in SW. The I drew a plane to close that part off so I could generate a core pattern using the Intersect command. That is a great command but it leaves you with a part called Intersect in your parts tree. I needed to a new two piece mold using that Intersection but I did not seem to be able to select it in my Parts Tree? Jgaertner

I have a few questions to try to clarify where you are. Is your yellow part its own SLDPRT or in another SLDPRT? Is it a solid body or a surface body? Are the blue and red models the ones you need to show on your drawing and you just don't want the yellow one anymore? You can use delete body if you are done with the yellow body. You can also hide that body.

  Hello Carrie, The yellow part is the result of an Intersection command. Imagine you have drawn in SW a part to be cast and it has to have a core, to go inside, to leave a hollow cavity. I used the Intersection command and saved the cavity (yellow) as a result. Its a core pattern. But you can not turn it off or suppress it, or the original part comes back in your drawing. I was trying to find a way to save the core as its own part, no longer connected to the original part and the Intersection part? Jgaertner

    I made a quick part to show a couple of things. I added a couple of planes to use with my intersect and then kept (but didn't merge) all bodies in my intersect. I changed colors so we could see them.
    Here's what I have after the intersect (and putting the outside back together with a combine.
    I have 3 solid bodies.
    
    We can see them in the cross section:
    
    If I want one of them to go away, I can use the delete body command or select the body and hit delete.
    I got rid of the bottom one by highlighting it in the body folder, and hitting delete. You can see the body-delete/keep feature is added in my tree.
    
    I could also hide the body
    
    You can also hide bodies in drawing views.
    
    Does any of this get you closer to what you need?

      Carrie is absolutely correct here. Just create configurations of your part and use the delete body to remove the ones you don't want for each config. Trying to do this in an assembly is more trouble than it's worth, unless you've got some compelling reason to do it that way.

        Thank you for going to all that trouble. I will give your method a try. I did get it done with the Combine command. I need to learn to use the right hand columns for selecting parts. I have mine collapsed most of the time. Thanks! Jgaertner

        Intersect can do everything combine can plus a lot more, once you figure out how to use it.
