New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress on Monday called for an adjournment of the session of parliament with reference to the elections in five countries of the country.
In a letter to Rajya Sabha chairperson, Derek O’Brien, TMC national spokesman, and RS member Derek O’Brien said MPs from his party could not attend parliament due to the polls. .
‘I am writing to you as Parliamentary Leader (Rajya Sabha) for the All India Trinamool Congress. “Sir, we urge you to consider postponing the next parliamentary session due to the declaration of elections in five states,” he said.
‘The Electoral Commission of India, on 26 February 2021, announced the election for five states, including Bengal. “Due to the ongoing intensive election preparations in the state, the members of parliament of the All India Trinamool Congress would find it difficult to attend the second part of the budget session from 8 March 2021,” he wrote in the letter.
TMC MP Sudeep Bandyopadhyay also wrote to the speaker of Lok Sabha on the same issue and asked that parliament be adjourned due to the ballot boxes. While O’Brien’s letter was dated March 8, Bandyopadhyay wrote to the LS speaker on February 6. The second part of parliament’s budget session began on Monday, but its duration is likely to be limited, as most top politicians will be campaigning for ballot boxes in March-April.
From now on, the session will end on April 8.
O’Brien mentioned two precedents in his letter when the sitting of parliament was postponed due to ballot boxes in the states.
He cites the example of the 222nd session, which began on 21 February 2011 and would be concluded on 21 April 2011. But due to the upcoming state assembly elections in five states – Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, the House was postponed on March 25, 2011, he said.
The second instance he presented was the 214th session, which began on 17 October 2008 and was postponed to 24 October 2008 to meet again on 10 December 2008. The session was scheduled to continue until November 21, 2008. However, due to the upcoming election in some states, the House was adjourned until December 10, 2008. “I am optimistic that you will consider this proposal from us,” the TMC leader said.
