A man went missing at a Mossel Bay beach in a drowning incident on Sunday.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) crew members responded to reports of a drowning in progress at Dias Beach around 14:00 on Sunday, NSRI Mossel Bay station commander Andre Fraser said.

"On arrival on the scene, a search commenced for a 21-year-old local man who was witnessed disappearing under water at the backline after being swept out to sea while swimming with friends," Fraser said.

The rescue crews were assisted by police officers and members of the police's Sea Borderline Unit, but were not able to locate the man.

"Despite an extensive search there remains no sign of the man and a police dive unit [is] continuing in an ongoing search operation," Fraser said.
