HISAR/KARNAL: Two farmers from Haryana, who had been participating in protests against the three contentious farm laws on the Delhi borders since Day 1, were found dead on Sunday morning. While Rajbir, 47, from Sisai Kalirawan village in Hisar district, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near the Tikri border protest site, Harinder Singh, 32, from Thari village of Karnal district, was found dead in his tent at Singhu border.
An unresponsive Harinder was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. He was cremated at his native village after his post-mortem was conducted at the civil hospital in Sonipat. Harinder owned two acres of land and is survived by his mother and a seven-year-old son. His wife died a few years ago.
Rajbir left behind a suicide note in which he has appealed to the Centre to “fulfill his last wish by repealing the three farm laws”. He also wrote, “Modi ji, you feel that a farmer is very strong, but fertiliser, medicine, and diesel have left him hollow.” Urging fellow farmers not to let his sacrifice go waste, he wrote, “Return home only when the three farm laws are repealed and MSP guaranteed”.
Sisai village panch Praveen Kumar, a nephew of the deceased farmer, said Rajbir had been at the Tikri border protest since the very beginning but used to come home now and then to tend to the fields and family. “He returned to Tikri about a week ago,” he said. Rajbir had three-acre land and leaves behind a married son, who is a gold medalist in wushu, and an unmarried daughter, who is a teacher in a private school.
