Jammu: Authorities sent 168 Rohingyas to jail after they were found illegally in the city, officials said Sunday.
The government of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday began collecting biometric and other details about Rohingyas staying here. The ride is part of an exercise to track down foreigners living in the city without valid documents.
“At least 168 illegal immigrants have been sent to the jail in Hiranagar,” a senior police officer told PTI.
The verification process of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar was carried out in the MAM stadium here amid high security, officials said.
During the ride Saturday, biometric and other details, such as the place of residence, were collected from Rohingyas, officials said.
The Rohingyas are a Bengali dialect-speaking Muslim minority in Myanmar. After persecution in their country, many of them entered India illegally through Bangladesh and found refuge in Jammu and other parts of India.
Many political parties and social organizations in Jammu have called on the center to take immediate action to deport Rohingyas and Bangladeshi nationals, claiming that their presence is a conspiracy to change the demographic character of the region and a threat for peace ‘. .
More than 13,700 foreigners, including Rohingya Muslims and Bangladeshi nationals, have settled in Jammu and Samba districts, where their population increased by more than 6,000 between 2008 and 2016, according to government data.
