China tells Biden to stop ‘dangerous practice’ in Taiwan

Beijing: The Chinese foreign minister warned Biden’s government on Sunday to withdraw former President Donald Trump’s ‘dangerous practice’ of showing support for Taiwan, the island democracy that Beijing claims as its own territory.

The Chinese claim to Taiwan, which split with the mainland in 1949, is an “insurmountable red line,” Wang Yi told a news conference at the annual meeting of the ceremonial legislature in China.

The United States has no official relations with the democratically elected government of Taiwan, but extensive informal ties. Trump, who left office in January, angered Beijing by sending cabinet officials to visit Taiwan in a show of support.

“The Chinese government has no room for compromise or concessions on the issue in Taiwan,” Wang said.

“We call on the new US government to fully understand the high sensitivity of the issue in Taiwan” and “to completely change the previous government’s dangerous practices of crossing the border” and playing with fire. ‘, he said.

Wang gave no indication of how Beijing would react if US policy was not changed, but the ruling Communist Party threatened to intervene if Taiwan declared formal independence or delayed talks on union with the mainland.

Biden says he wants a more civilian relationship with Beijing, but shows no sign of softening Trump’s confrontational measures on trade, technology and human rights. Surveys show that US public attitudes are more negative towards China, which is seen as an economic and strategic competitor.
