We deserve to be in the WTC final, very exciting for us as a team: Kohli

11After reaching the final of the World Test Championship (WTC), the Indian captain, Virat Kohli, said that his team absolutely deserves to be there in the top clash of the Test Championship.

Team India roared in the final of the first edition of the ICC World Cup (WTC) on Saturday after an emphatic 3-1 victory over England. Virat Kohli’s men, who beat England in the fourth and final Test at Narendra Modi Stadium by an innings and 25 runs, will now tackle New Zealand in the WTC final, which will be played from 18 to 22 June, with June 23 as reserve day at the iconic Lord’s Stadium in London.

‘Well, we’re pretty relieved now that we’ve reached the WTC final. If you look at the last 2-2.5 years and how we have played, we probably deserve to be in the finals. It’s just about getting together as a group and focusing on the big game that is very exciting for us as a team, ‘Kohli said in a video posted on the official BCCI website.

Commenting on the upcoming WTC final, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane said: ‘I think the way we came back as a team, each individual acted. I want to admit everyone, I think everyone hung out there. It’s all about the team, we always talk about how we can contribute to the team and that’s what we did. I’m really happy as an individual and as a vice captain. We travel in not only the WTC, but also before that we played very well. ”

Batsman Rohit Sharma said India had bounced back after every challenge given to them and therefore the team deserved a place in the final.

Congratulations to every team member and staff that made it through to the finals. It’s been a long journey since the WTC started, we’ve played well in India and also played outside India. We have been put in difficult situations many times and respond well to those situations and that is why we are standing here in the final round of the WTC. We deserve to be in the final round of the WTC, ”said Rohit.

India finished as the best team with 72.2 percentage points in the WTC points table, the factor that determined the final position rather than the total points won, after a change in the points system due to the Covid-19 disruption.

The Black Caps were the first team to secure a place in the final with 70 percentage points. Australia finished third with 69.2 percentage points, while England finished fourth with 61.4 percentage points.

The Black Caps qualified for the WTC final after the postponement of the Test series between South Africa and Australia. In November last year, the ICC confirmed that the WTC scoring system due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
