Govt should provide free vaccine for cervical cancer : Dr Jeyarani

Chennai, Mar 7 (UNI) The Chennai-based Aakash Fertility Centre and Hospital
today conducted a free cancer cervix and breast screening camp for women
to mark the International Women's Day and urged the government to provide
free vaccine to young women to prevent cervical cancer.
Hospital Co-founder Dr K S Jeyarani Kamaraj said the free screening camp
exclusively for women was jointly organised by the Obstetric and
Gynaecological Society of Southern India, All India Democratic Women's
Association and the International Sexology Association and the World
Association of sexology.
Speaking on the occasion, she said women were subjected to various
diseases and diseases such as breast cancer and cervical cancer could
be curable if diagnosed earlier and can be prevented with vaccination
in young age.
Stating that women could subject themselves to simple self examination
and screening tests to identify whether they were having signs and
symptoms of common breast and uterus cancer, Dr Jeyarani said
vaccines were available for treatment of cervical cancer which is mostly
caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
''Since this vaccine is expensive and costs about Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000,
the government should come forward and offer it free to women'', she
said.
This would help in reducing the cancer rate to a great extent, she added.
This camp benefitted more than 150 women with free breast and cervix
cancer screening and awareness education about cancer prevention.
