A division bench of MP high court has issued notices to the state government in response to a petition challenging the legality of Freedom of Religion Act. The petitioner, a Bhopal resident, has sought quashing of the law, contending that it was in violation of Article 14, 19, 21 and 25 of the Constitution. The act, popularly known as ‘love jihad’ law, provides for an imprisonment from three to 10 years if anyone forces a person to convert his/her religion through marriage.
