Washington Sundar came this close to slamming a well-deserved century at the Motera stadium in the fourth and final Test against England on Saturday. Even worse, Sundar’s unbeaten 96* could have been his maiden Test century but it weren’t meant to be. Sundar had crafted century-stands with both Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel and while Pant went on to score a century on Day 2, there was to be no such luck for Sundar. Having played the role of the anchor as Pant took on the English bowling, Sundar stepped up the scoring rate on Day 3 and seemed to be cruising towards a maiden Test century.
However, when Axar was run-out by Joe Root it triggered a collapse. Ben Stokes removed both Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj in the same over, meaning Sundar was left with no partner at unbeaten 96.
The unfortunate event inadvertently turned into a meme fest as cricket fans on Twitter imagined the disappointment that Sundar’s desi father would have felt following his son missing out on his first Test ton.

For context, earlier this year Sundar’s father was upset with his son for not getting a Test century against Australia. Sundar scored 62 off 144 balls and shared a 123-run seventh wicket partnership with Shardul Thakur, who made 67 on the third day of the fourth Test between India and Australia at The Gabba. Sundar was the ninth man to be dismissed.
“I am disappointed he did not get a 100. When Siraj came, he should have hit fours and sixes. He is capable of that. He should have gone for sixes. He could have gone for pulls and big hits. Perhaps, he thought of trying to come close to Australia’s total as the lead was very less,” father M Sundar told IANS from Chennai.
