Tamil Nadu Election 2021 Live News: Amit Shah exudes confidence of NDA 'coalition government' in Tamil Nadu

Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched his party's campaign for the April 6 Lok Sabha bypoll in Tamil Nadu and exuded confidence that the party would not only win here, but that the NDA in Tamil Nadu would emerge victorious in the assembly elections too next month.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K S Alagiri on Sunday said his party did not intend seeking a share in power if the DMK is elected after the April 6 assembly poll.

TTV Dhinakaran’s AMMK will interview poll aspirants in Chennai on February 8 and 9. A release from the party said the ticket seekers should participate as per the schedule put out by the leadership.

The election commission has allotted ‘Mango’ symbol to Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) on a request from the party to contest in the assembly election. The PMK is a recognised state party in Union Territory of Puducherry, having the reserved symbol, ‘Mango.’ In a letter to the chief electoral officer Satyabrata Sahoo, the commission secretary Jaydeb Lahiri said the party had made the request for allotment of the symbol to its candidates in the assembly elections in TN. “The commission has decided to extend the concession sought,” Lahiri said.

The election commission announced 11 alternative photo identity documents, other than the electors photo identity card (EPIC), that voters can carry to polling booths for confirming identity. The alternatives are — Aadhaar card, MGRNEGA job card, passbooks with photograph issued by banks/post offices, health insurance smart card issued under the scheme of Union ministry of labour, driving licence, pan card, smart card issued by registrar general of India under National Population Register, Indian passport, pension document with photograph, service identity cards with photo issued to employees by central/state government/PSUs/ public limited companies and official identity cards issued to MPs/MLAs/MLCs.

The DMK and the Congress are set to sign a seat-sharing deal on Sunday that gives the national party 25 assembly seats and Kanyakumari LS seat, sources said. The agreement would be signed by DMK president M K Stalin and Congress leader K S Alagiri at DMK headquarters.

Amit Shah will launch Vijay Sankalp Mahasampark Abhiyaan, a door-to-door campaign, in Kanyakumari.
