For the Chopras, who are in their 40s and based out of Bangalore, the plan to build their own home kept getting postponed over the last few years. “At first, it was health issues. Next came the death of a close family member, followed by the speculation of price correction and then, there was the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown,” says Arushi Chopra. She adds that in 2021, they are hoping and wishing for a new start and planning to construct their duplex house near Hennur. This time, the Chopras also plan to abide by Vastu Shastra principles.

“We took it very lightly all these years but after a string of bad news, our close friends suggested that we move into a new home and design the house as per Vastu Shastra. We thought, why not,” says Alankrit Chopra.

Vastu muhurat: Ideal time to start house construction in 2021 

There are multiple opinions, when it comes to the shubh muhurats for house construction. The general consensus is that construction of a house should not start during Ashada Shukla to Kartik Shukla. It is believed that Lord Vishnu sleeps for four months from Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi and wakes up to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi. During these months, believers usually do not go in for marriages, house construction or even a new business.

So, which dates are the most auspicious to start home construction in 2021?

In the months that are suitable to start construction of a home, you may choose one of the dates mentioned below. Also note that Saturdays, Sundays and Tuesdays must be avoided. Mondays and Thursdays are the best.

Avoid these days for home construction in 2021

As already mentioned, some dates in the year 2021 are not suitable to start something as grand as a house construction. For example, starting a house construction between June 14 and July 13, 2021, may attract the death of a family member.

Similarly, starting construction between September 14 and October 13, 2021 is not good, as per Vastu and may invite diseases and discomfort. Another date that you should avoid is March 14 to April 13, 2021 which can result in any cause of fear.

Depending upon the season, construction activity either picks up pace or slackens. You would have come across many contractors who are eager to start the house construction during the autumn season. The reason being, it is easier to pour concrete over soil that has not frozen or hardened due to the winters and neither is it so hot that the risk of overheating may do more harm than good. Autumn (that is, from late September to November), therefore, is a good time to start the construction of your home. It is also a good time for contractors to finish much of the exterior work and then, gradually focus on building the interiors of the new property.

Best month to start renovation of property

If much of your focus is on the interiors, that is, if you are looking at renovation or remodelling largely within the house, winters may not be a bad time. In fact, it is a practical approach too. Labourers working at your site can find it less strenuous to work during the winter months, rather than taking up the hard work in the summer months when the temperature typically reaches even 45 degrees Celsius. However, ensure that cost overruns do not take place. 

For areas experiencing excessive air pollution, winters may not be too good. Over the last few years, the Delhi government, for example, had directed a ban on construction and related activities, temporarily. If you are someone looking to start the construction, make an informed decision.

Is spring a good time to begin construction work?

Your contractors will be able to tell you better. If the ground is not wet or frozen, it should be a good time. In India, most contractors prefer doing work in the house’s interiors during early spring but prefer utilising the spring months if it is a project that would take months to complete.

Constructing your house in the summer season

If you are expecting delays in completing the house construction, do begin in summers. Longer days in summers helps workers utilise the daytime well. It may be very hot but even after taking breaks, the daylight lasts over a longer period and can be utilised better. It is good to consider this time for projects that would take more time to complete.

It has also been seen that given that a number of people undertake construction activities during the early summer, the price of raw materials also increases. You may want to weigh the pros and cons and make a decision.

Importance of bhumi pujan in Indian culture

It is in our culture, to start every auspicious activity by invoking God’s name. Bhumi pujan is the act of offering prayers to God, mother earth and the forces of nature. The foundation stone is laid during the bhumi pujan and it symbolises humans asking permission from the divine forces. It is also conducted, to ask for forgiveness from living beings that took shelter at the site and its premises. Any unintended harm or displacement that might be caused to such creatures is sought to be forgiven, through the bhumi pujan. Overall, it is a way of seeking blessings and maintaining peace with nature.

Note that there is a difference between starting the construction and laying the foundation for a new home. As per Vastu and customs, one must lay the foundation stone before starting construction.

Baisakh (May), Margshirsh (December), Paush (January) and Phalgun (March) are the best months for foundation-laying. Baishakh, Shravan, Margshirsh, Magh, Falgun, Bhadrapad and Kartik are permissible. All the other months except the ones listed below, are good for laying the foundation.

Chaitra 

This is from March to April. One must avoid this time, because it is said to bring on hardships for the home owner.

Jyeshtha 

This is the month of June and the planets are not in the favourable position.

Asharh

Avoid the month of July for foundation laying, because it is said to bring about loss, especially if the owner has animal stock or a business related to it.

Shravan 

This is the month of August and the time is not favourable as it can bring upon financial losses.

Bhadrapad

Avoid September 2021 to dig for the foundation of your new home, as it can result in fights and tension in the house.

Ashwin 

To avoid family disputes at home, avoid October 2021 to lay the foundation of your new home, as per Vastu.

Kartik

You may not enjoy the help of servants at home or subordinates, if the foundation is laid in the month of November.

Magh

February 2021 may bring upon some kind of threat or danger if the foundation is laid in this month.

About bhumi pujans in India

Religious leaders look at the Hindu Panchang, that is, the Hindu calendar, for muhurathams. It is advisable that you consult a renowned and experienced astrologer to choose the perfect muhurat for your bhumi pujan and house construction. When an astrologer is consulted, he generally analyses your birth and horoscope details, to arrive at a date. These days, you can also consult experienced astrologers online. However, it may still be better to get in touch with those you know or those recommended by peers and family members.

What is the typical bhumi pujan ritual like?

To begin with, the land is cleared before the bhumi puja. An experienced priest is consulted and called, to lay the foundation. If you are the owner of the property, you will be asked to face east while the priest himself will face north and sit on the lathi. Thereafter, prayers are chanted to make the premises holy.  You can also see the priest worshipping Lord Ganesh, the kalash and the silver snake. The logic behind this worship is that Sheshnaag governs the earth and is a servant of Lord Vishnu. Hence, you would be seeking his blessings, asking him to preserve your house. The kalash on the other hand symbolises the universe.

Invocation of the Sheshnaag is usually done by chanting mantras and by pouring milk, curd and ghee. You will also see that the priest puts a betel nut and a coin into the urn so as to invoke the blessing of Goddess Lakshmi.  As the puja progresses, the God of directions, Dikpalas, the snake god or Naga and the family deity known as the Kuldevata are worshipped. When the land is dug, it is done so by chanting the nag mantra. It is good to distribute sweets or even fruits among those gathered for the bhumi puja. 

What items need to be bought for a bhumi pujan ceremony?

The priest who is conducting the pujan will give you a list, however, most commonly the following are used – rice, coconut, betel leaves, betel nuts – flower bunch, fruits, prasad, camphor, agarbatti, cotton for arti, oil or ghee, deep or diya, water, turmeric powder, kumkum, paper towels, pick axe, quarter coins, navratna or panchdhatu.

Is bhumi pujan time important?

Yes, just like the day and date, the exact time to begin the puja is also as important. It is for this reason that elders consult priests and astrologers.
