New Delhi: The government may examine a proposal to extend the provision of free LPG cylinders for beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme in FY22 by three months to alleviate more than 83 million GDP households from the rising price of cooking gas.
The price of the 14.2 kg cylinder has risen by more than R125 per cylinder since January following a global price increase. This increased the price of an LPG cylinder until January 819 by R694. Since May last year, the price of cooking gas in Delhi has risen by 237.50.
Sources said that with Covid pandemic that continues to affect the country and cause disruptions at various levels, the government can even in FY22 come up with further stimulus measures. The provision of three free LPG cylinders to Ujjawala subscribers may form part of these incentives when announced.
In the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan package during the pandemic last year, free LPG cylinders were given to all beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme for three months. Cash amounts equal to the retail price of the LPG cylinders were transferred directly to the beneficiaries’ accounts.
The 2021-22 budget also announced the addition of ten million beneficiaries under Ujjawala over two years. The government’s flagship scheme under which cooking gas compounds are allocated free of charge to women among families below the poverty line (BPL).
