Manor man pleads guilty in 2 drug overdose deaths

Mar. 5—A Manor man who has cooperated with prosecutors in a case against a co-defendant pleaded guilty Friday to two drug delivery resulting in death charges.

Jeremy S. Mason, 35, admitted guilt during a virtual court appearance in connection with two fatal drug overdoses in 2017. His "exemplary" cooperation with prosecutors was noted during the hearing and will be repeated during a sentencing hearing later this year, said Assistant District Attorney Anthony Iannamorelli.

"We would not have had a case against Demetrius Christmas without Jeremy Mason," Iannamorelli said. "That's a big part of this."

Mason identified Christmas, 32, of Turtle Creek, as the person from whom he purchased fentanyl-laced heroin and later sold it to Paul Lucas, 21, of Murrysville, and Jeffrey Gettemy Jr., 30, of Greensburg. Lucas, 21, was found dead on April 13, 2017 and Gettemy, 30, died May 31, 2017. Mason testified against Christmas during a preliminary hearing.

Judge Tim Krieger sentenced Christmas in October to serve two concurrent 9- to 18-year state prison sentences after Christmas pleaded guilty to the charges. According to police, Lucas paid Mason $70 for the drugs he purchased from Christmas. During a previous court appearance, Mason testified he paid Christmas $60 for drugs he sold to Gettemy.

Mason has been held at the Westmoreland County Prison in connection with the charges since September 2017. He does not have a plea agreement with prosecutors and his sentence will be up to Krieger.

"Certainly, the court will consider anything the Commonwealth has to say and anything (defense attorney) Mr. (Patrick) Thomassey has to say," Krieger said.

Mason also pleaded guilty to drug possession charges. Each drug delivery resulting in death count carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison.

It's true that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine trials showed a 72 percent efficacy rate, while Moderna and Pfizer, the two other approved coronavirus vaccines, have a rate of about 95 percent. But health experts say it's still an excellent option, and has other perks like only requiring a single shot and frequently leading to fewer side effects, reports The New York Times. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said people shouldn't overthink which one to get, and explained the vaccines can't really be compared head-to-head because of different trial circumstances. Besides, experts note, the raw numbers don't show the full picture. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine prevented all hospitalizations and deaths in its large clinical trial, meaning the slightly lower efficacy rate really only points to mild to moderate disease. Detroit's mayor, however, said the city has been able to meet demand with just its supply of Pfizer and Moderna doses, but CNN notes Duggan's administration only expanded vaccine eligibility to residents ages 50 and older with chronic medical conditions on Thursday. Duggan said he would accept Johnson & Johnson doses later on if all other doses are distributed and there are remaining residents who want a vaccine.     Imran Khan on Saturday faces the biggest test yet of his nearly three-year premiership in a crunch confidence vote after losing a senate race. The former cricket star has told his ruling coalition to back him or he will return to opposition, after the surprise defeat of his party's key candidate in upper house elections. His Movement for Justice party on Friday said the cabinet would be dismissed and a new prime minister elected if the 68-year-old prime minister lost the vote. The surprise election of former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani ahead of Mr Khan's finance minister, Abdul Hafiz Sheikh, precipitated Mr Khan's biggest crisis since he won power in 2018. Mr Khan accused his own parliamentarians of succumbing to the very corruption he has vowed to stamp out, claiming 15 or 16 "sold" their vote for opposition bribes. A court ruling before the vote that the election would be a secret ballot has meant the rebels could not be identified. "This is your democratic right ... just raise your hands that you don't have confidence and I will go into the opposition [benches]," the prime minister told supporters during a televised speech to the nation. Though Mr Khan improved his standing in the 100-member Senate, the defeat of a key ally and an apparent rebellion by his own party has energised the opposition. Maryam Nawaz Sharif, daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, said Mr Khan had “suffered a humiliating defeat [and] his members expressed a lack of confidence in him and voted against him". Mr Khan swept to power in July 2018 on an anti-corruption platform vowing to stamp out the political graft of leaders like Mr Sharif. His opponents alleged his victory was orchestrated by the country's generals, who have ruled the country directly or behind the scenes for much of Pakistan's history. Mr Khan met with the Army chief and the military spy agency on Thursday. Pakistan’s spy agency has been asked to monitor the movements of Mr Khan's lawmakers to secure their votes, officials told Bloomberg. An alliance of opposition parties has threatened to mobilise a mass march on the capital later this month the try to force Mr Khan's resignation.
