House Progressive leader breaks silence about Senate COVID bill changes

The head of the House Progressive Caucus Saturday provided a press release of help in favor of the Senate version of the coronavirus laws regardless of the weakening of some provisions that House liberals had fought for.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., referred to as the $1.9 trillion plan “a truly progressive and bold package” regardless of the removing of the $15 minimal wage provisions and changes to $1,400 stimulus verify eligibility and to unemployment advantages.

“[D]espite the fact that we believe any weakening of the House provisions were bad policy and bad politics, the reality is that the final amendments were relatively minor concessions,” stated Jayapal, who chairs the almost 100-member Democratic caucus.

“You are right Congresswoman, it’s disgusting to see colleagues callously disregard policies that will lift people out of poverty and support working class Americans,” Omar wrote. 

Rep. Cori Bush, one other member of the progressive squad, additionally tweeted Friday considerations about the changes within the Senate saying: “Blocking more help for people is unjustifiable.”
