VSP privatisation : AP bandh success, peaceful

Vijayawada, Mar 5 (UNI) The bandh call given in Andhra Pradesh by the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Protection Forum, protesting against the Central government’s proposal of privatising the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), was a success and peaceful across the state on Friday.
The bandh call evoked good response as all the commercial establishments, educational institutions and banks remained closed while the APSRTC buses were off the road.
Since the state government announced its support to the bandh call, the APSRTC buses confined to the bus depots and all the educational institutions declared a holiday today.
With the AP Lorry Owners Association extended support to the bandh, all Lorries and trucks were off the road.
All the thoroughfares and arterial roads in major cities including in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Guntur, Nellore, Kadapa, Kurnool and Anantapur wore a deserted look.
The bandh passed off peacefully and no untoward incident took place anywhere in the state, police said.
YSRCP MP V Vijaya Sai Reddy, Ministers Muttamsetti Srinivas and K Kannababu took part in the agitation in Visakhapatnam. Large number of activists of the TDP, Congress, YSRCP and Left parties took out massive rallies in Vijayawada, Guntur, Kurnool and Kadapa cities holding party flags and raising slogans against the privatisation proposal of VSP.
A huge human chain was formed in Visakhapatnam while Left party leaders staged a dharna by squatting on the road in front of bus stations in Guntur, Nellore, Tirupati and other cities.
A motorcycle rally was taken out in Srikakulam.
Talking to the media here, CPI (M) state secretary P Madhu strongly opposed the Centre’s proposal of privatising the VSP.
“Many factories were allocated captive mines but the VSP has not been allocated captive mines which pushed it into losses”, the CPI-M leader said, and demanded the Centre to allocate captive mines to VSP and withdraw the privatisation proposal.
