Easter Sunday: Christian forum seeks alteration of Tripura poll date

Agartala, Mar 4 (UNI) The United Christian Forum for Human Rights sought rescheduling the election to Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (ADC), as the scheduled date of polling on April 4 next collided to Easter Day – Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In a letter to State Election Commissioner, the forum stated that April 4 (Sunday) being Easter Day is the feast day for Christians and since India has proven to be peaceful heaven for every religion and culture, the sentiment of Christians has to be respected.
Moreover, a large number of people living in the ADC area are believers in Christianity.
“Being a pluralistic state, Indian have a great feeling of nationality and to maintain the genre our constitution is secular. So we want to register our objection to the date scheduled for holding elections to ADC and demand to change it to any other day,” the letter stated.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement Spokesperson of Diocese of Agartala said, “Representatives of the Christian community met yesterday and expressed their disappointment over the election date of ADC. The day is not only observed as Easter Sunday, also it is the culmination of the weeklong obligatory observance of faith for all Christians around the world. Elections held on Easter Sunday would certainly hamper both the celebration as well as the election.”
As per the announcement of the Election Commission, the notification to be issued today followed by the nomination process will be started and to be continued till March 12 next. The last date of withdrawal of nomination is scheduled on March 17 and the poll will be held on April 4 and counting on April 8 next.
However, with the objection on the poll date, no political party including the major stakeholders of ADC – IPFT, INPT and TIPRA yet to react.
