India’s power trading volumes jumped 50 per cent in February

The volume of power traded at Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), the nation’s largest electricity trading platform, jumped 50 per cent to 6,769 million units in February this year indicating a revival in economic activity.

“The national peak demand at 188 Gigawatt registered 2.17 per cent growth while the average daily electricity consumption increased 3.31 per cent in February 2021,” IEX said in a statement. The day-ahead market traded 5,124 million units and witnessed 19.5 per cent growth in February.

The cumulative sell bids at 8,535 million units were 1.7 times of the cleared volume, indicating ample availability of power in the market. The average monthly price at Rs 3.39 per unit during the month saw 16 per cent increase driven by a sharp rise in demand from several states.

The term-ahead market comprising intra-day, contingency, daily and weekly contracts traded 432 million units in February recording a 90.84 per cent increase.
