Gram panchayat member dies, 10 others injured as two rival political groups clash during deputy sarpanch poll in Sangli

Sangli, Mar 4 (UNI) A candidate for deputy sarpanch post was allegedly killed and ten other people including a gram panchayat member, were injured in a clash between two rival political groups during the election of deputy sarpanch at Borgaon village in Kavathe-Mahankal tehsil of the district on Thusday.
Following resignation of deputy sarpanch Namdev Patil, a special meeting of the gram panchayat was called to elect new deputy sarpanch in the afternoon, in which 11 elected members including eight of BJP MP Sanjay Patil's group and three of NCP MLA Ms Suman Patil's group were present, police said.
While the members of two groups were coming for the special meeting, the supporters of two groups allegedly started beating up each other with clubs and canes, in which 12 people including two gram panchayat members -- Pandurang Janardhan Kale (51, deputy sarpanch candidate) and Ganesh Patil -- were injured and were rushed to a hospital.
However, Mr Kale succumbed before admission in the hospital, while Mr Patil is in serious condition.
After receiving information of the clash, a team of Kavathe-Mahankal police rushed to the spot and dispersed the supporters of two groups from the spot.
The police team is camping in Borgaon village for handling any untoward situation, sources added.
