Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma rubbished the charge from certain sections of the party that the public meetings of some of the party change-seekers, including him and Ghulam Nabi Azad, held in Jammu last week, amounted to “hobnobbing with the BJP”. Asserting that his credentials as “a committed Congressman” are unquestionable, he said the issues they raised were only about uniting and strengthening the Congress against the BJP.
“I consider such insinuation (charge of hobnobbing with the BJP) as the ultimate insult. I can’t dignify gutter-garbage with a response. Those naturally habituate there may thrive on it. I am a lifelong Congressman and nobody can question my commitment to the party,” Sharma said on Thursday, responding to questions on the charge he and his like-minded colleagues faced after their meetings in Jammu.
“In fact, we all (change-seekers) are founders and builders of the party. We have dedicated our lives and shall continue to make all possible efforts to strengthen and energise the party,” he said. “Only a united and strong Congress can fight the BJP and restore the much-needed political and ideological balance in India democracy. That alone is my purpose. And that is also the issue and concern that some of us raised in the (joint) letter.”
Asked why they had made the Jammu visit in the middle of the assembly polls in some other states, Sharma said, “As Ghulam Nabi Azad was visiting his home state first time since he retired as the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, he invited some of us to join him and so we went with him. What is wrong with that? Also, our speeches in Jammu were about the need to strengthen the Congress party.”
On the All India Congress Committee (AICC) spokesperson saying they should have instead travelled to the election-bound states to strengthen the party’s campaign, Sharma said, “Of course, we will work and campaign for the Congress wherever the party asks us to do so, as we have always done in the past.”
Incidentally, it is the AICC leadership that picks and chooses the official party campaigners in every election.
