Back in June 2020, Rockstar had announced that Grand Theft Auto 5 will be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. While speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference (transcribed by VGC), Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick talked about the company’s approach towards next-gen versions of GTA 5.
Zelnick said, “Grand Theft Auto [V] is now heading into its third generation which is incredible. It was a standard-bearer when it was launched, it continued to be the standard-bearer in the second generation, we’ll see how Grand Theft Auto does in the next generation. Obviously, I’m confident that Rockstar is going to deliver just a great experience, but you can’t do that if you’re just doing a simple port.”
Zelnick’s statements suggest that GTA 5 may come with some new content. The game receives major updates frequently, which has helped the game to stay popular sever years after its release. GTA Online recently added its biggest heist ever called the Cayo Perico Heist, which introduced a brand-new location, an action-packed storyline, and some social features.
Zelnick also reflected on remasters being potentially becoming a bigger part of the company’s strategy. He said, “I’m not sure there’ll be a bigger part of the strategy. Remastering has always been a part of the strategy. We’ve done differently than the competition – we don’t just port titles over, we actually take the time to do the very best job we can making the title different for the new release, for the new technology that we’re launching it on. So, we improve the technology, we upgrade the visuals, and we make performance enhancements. And that’s why I think our remastered titles typically do so well.”
When he was asked about an update on GTA 6, Zelnick said, “Rockstar hasn’t announced any new titles for the market and when there’s an announcement to be made, it will come from Rockstar, so I’ll probably leave you there, and I don’t think you would have expected anything different from me.”
