Chloé celebrates natural beauty in a nod to 1960s hippy culture

In her debut collection for the French fashion house, creative director Gabriela Hearst channelled the Swinging Sixties with minimal makeup, soft waves and flawless, dewy skin at Paris Fashion Week AW21

All eyes were on Chloé today as Gabriela Hearst made her design debut at the helm of the French fashion house. Mixing the brand’s ultra-feminine, bohemian codes with Hearst’s sustainable attitude, the collection was a composite of knitted dresses, recycled cashmere, patchwork leather and striped ponchos, all inspired by her Uruguayan roots.

On the beauty front, Hearst paid subtle homage to late 1960s hippy culture. Styled by Holli Smith, hair was either parted down the middle and ironed straight or styled into soft glossy waves. Elsewhere, fringes were worn long and shaggy, while afros were left natural.

As for the makeup, Bobbi Brown’s newly appointed global artistic director, Hannah Murray wanted to create “individual, strong, beautiful hippies.” She did this by focusing on dewy skin and minimal makeup to create a fresh, natural look.

“We gave the girls flawless skin, a softly strengthened brow and enhanced the boyish tones of the eye with a soft taupe washed on the eyelid and underneath lower lashes,” says Murray. “A slightly weathered flush was given to cheeks and lips.”
