Sandwiches, burritos, yoghurt are some of the items we can expect on a breakfast menu. A restaurant, known for its experimental food preparations has introduced a breakfast pizza.
The new pizza on the menu has got the internet buzzing because of its quirky choice of toppings. Froot loops. Move over, pineapple as the cereal could become the next most controversial pizza toppings.
Fong’s Pizza in Des Moines, Iowa, has been grabbing attention since they added the dessert pizza to the breakfast menu. They call it “Loopy Fruits Pizza” and it’s shocking and intriguing to the internet at the same time.
The pizza is simple and it comes with, of course, a layer of Froot Loops cereal. The base of the pizza dough is topped with sour cream and cream cheese frosting. It is then topped with mozzarella cheese, with a drizzle of Greek yoghurt and condensed milk. The pizza is now a permanent pie at the Forest Avenue location of the eatery.
The co-founder of Fong’s Pizza, Gwen Page told TODAY that the Loopy Fruits Pizza is newly introduced. However, it originally debuted five to six years ago at their Ankeny location. The idea of the dessert pizza never took off until now. 12 years ago, Fong’s opened its first location in downtown Des Moines and became a popular spot for late-night dining. The second location which they expanded in the suburbs was less common in late-night business. Therefore, they ventured into breakfast, to appeal to the suburban community and families.
Page understands that the Loopy Froots breakfast pizza might not be for everyone. She knows that it might not be the most popular item on their menu. However, Page believes that the dish has piqued intrigue in people talking and they start wondering what Fong’s Pizza might do next. Her goal through the restaurant is to make memorable experiences for all the guests, adding, “That’s why I’m in business, just connecting with people and making crazy, wacky pizzas!”
Twitter users had some interesting reactions to the topping after the Des Moines Register shared an article about the pizza last week. People are perplexed by the amalgamation of pizza and sugary breakfast cereal.
