MediaTek announces MT9638 4k smart TV chipset

MediaTek has announced a new 4K smart TV chipset called the MT9638. The new chipset boasts features such as AI super-resolution, AI picture quality and AI voice assistants. It can also offer variable refresh rate (VRR) and motion estimation and motion compensation (MEMC) to smoothen the graphics.
In a press statement, the company said that the TV chip is designed to enhance the user experience with a custom APU that brings high-performance AI computing to smart TVs.
It is equipped with built-in AI picture quality technology which allows real-time content and scene recognition to automatically adjust colour saturation, brightness and sharpness of the screen. It also supports smart noise reduction to improve overall image quality.
The new chipset features a multi-core Arm Cortex-A55 CPU, Arm Mali-G52 GPU and a MediaTek APU integrated into a single chip. It comes with up to 4K60 resolution support with a multimedia decoding engine for HEVC, VP9 and the latest AV1 content.
The TV chipset has HDR10+ display support along with Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual X surround sound support. It offers HDMI 2.1a and USB 3.0 port in addition to the Wi-Fi 6 connectivity feature.
It is equipped with up to four far-field microphones which are said to deliver full room coverage for voice assistants.
As said by the company in a press release, MT9638-powered 4K smart TVs are expected to reach the consumer market in the second quarter of 2021.
