Tourism in Egypt will go back to pre-pandemic levels by autumn 2022, hoped a government minister.

The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled Al-Anani said that tourism’s recovery and restoration to pre-pandemic levels would be because of countries’ Covid-19 vaccination programs along with Egypt’s efforts to develop archaeological sites in the Red Sea and South Sinai areas.

In the last three months of 2020, Egypt witnessed between 270,000 and 290,000 tourists on a monthly basis, which was equivalent to 10,000 tourists a day, the minister said.

Al-Anani said that the Grand Egyptian Museum would be finished during the third quarter of this year, given that, in the next few days, the winning international alliance to manage the museum’s operations is announced.

Tourism is one of the principal pillars of the Egyptian economy. It made revenue of $4 billion in 2020, compared to $13.03 billion in 2019. The country received about 3.5 million tourists last year, compared to 13 million in 2019.
