The Adam Project Screenwriter Shares Details About the Upcoming Ryan Reynolds Netflix Movie

Netflix is developing a time travel movie called The Adam Project, starring Ryan Reynolds. While speaking to Collider, screenwriter Jonathan Tropper revealed that time travel will be used as a storytelling device, instead of making it the main focus of the movie.

Tropper said, “To me, the time was just a device. The movie is not a hardcore sci-fi time travel movie. It’s a movie about people. For me, it was more about the characters and the story of this boy who’s lost his father and is trying to come to terms with what that means, through a really interesting adventure. I’m never gonna write a Christopher Nolan-type movie about time travel. That wouldn’t interest me. For me, it’s more about finding that story that appeals to the little kid in all of us.”

The Adam Project follows a time traveller, played by Reynolds, who goes back in time to meet his 13-year-old self. They team up to track down their father to correct some events in the future. The movie also features Walker Scobell and Mark Ruffalo. Tropper explained that he has been working on The Adam Project script for the past 8 years.

He said, “The Adam Project is something that I’ve been working on for eight years. I wrote it eight years ago and I just really fought hard to keep it alive at the studio and to keep them looking for the right way to make it.”

Reynolds has worked closely with Tropper on The Adam Project as Reynolds is also a producer on the movie. Tropper said, “He’s also a producer on the film. He and Shawn Levy, the director (who I’ve worked with before), spent a lot of time pouring over the script, and Ryan gave a lot of input into the script, absolutely. He’s very sharp-witted and his wit is very specific. It’s not just his wit, his sense of character is very sharp. We spent a lot of time honing the script together once he came on board.”

Netflix hasn’t announced the release date of The Adam Project yet. In the meantime, check out the list of new content coming to Netflix in March 2021.
