Reaction sparks after announcement of monthly honorarium to tribal social leaders ahead of ADC poll

Agartala, Mar 1 (UNI) To win over the tribal communities ahead of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb announced a monthly honorarium of Rs 2000 to the society heads of each tribe, which triggered a reaction among indigenous political leaders.
Tripura has as many as 19 tribal communities and there are around 150 such leaders.
The Chief Minister has been attending the felicitation programme of different tribal communities for the last two days in different parts of the state.
He has attended the felicitation of leaders of Mog tribe on Monday at Manu Bankul followed by Reang leaders at Shantirbazar in south Tripura and Molsom leaders at Killa of Gomati district.
Deb had attended three such community leaders’ felicitation programme of Tripura Kshetriya Samaj at Vivekananda Stadium here, followed by Madhav Master Para of Chawmanu organised by Chakma community and Gandacherra Bazar by Tripuri tribe under Dhalai district on Sunday.
The occasion is a historic one as it strengthens harmony among the communities as well as to some extent represents our respect towards the social leaders of ethnic communities. The state government is committed to honour and glorify the rich culture and heritage of the tribes and the
monthly honorarium is the beginning, Deb stated
“We have already started codification of Customary Laws of different tribes,” Deb added.
He stated felicitation of tribal social leaders was an attempt to recognize their contributions in maintaining discipline in the society and preserving the heritage and added, “The previous governments were unable to realise the values of Indian culture and its heritage.”
He recalled that during King’s rule Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya used to do the practice of paying homage to the social leaders of the small tribal groups of the state but it had been stopped for a long time. There was an attempt to destroy the culture of the state.
However, the opposition political parties criticised the move and said before the election to ADC in the name of paying an honorarium to social leaders, the BJP government is attempting to buy the votes of those communities through such cheap steps. The Biplab Deb government had committed a huge bonanza for tribal development in their election manifesto but after three years did not fulfil a single promise.
“The indigenous people of Tripura are well educated and sensitive, Biplab Deb must remember it before driving into such a move,” said senior CPM tribal leader and former Loksabha MP Jitendra Chowdhury.
