Renault Kiger first drive review

The compact SUV space is getting quite interesting with the Renault Kiger throwing its hat in the ring.  It is stacked up against the recently launched Nissan Magnite, which just happens to be its cousin as they share the same underpinnings.  While having an additional option is certainly going to spoil the customers for choice, the question to answer is whether the Renault Kiger will generate the necessary wow factor in this increasingly challenging segment.

Renault Kiger
The Kiger carries a sharp design!

The Renault Kiger exteriors are where the story really gets interesting.  A muscular stance with wide shoulders, sporty grooves on the bonnet, a set of beautiful tri-octa headlamps, a sloping roof line with a set of very impressive taillights on the back hatch, all add to its stand out good looks.   The diamond cut alloys fill the wheel wells exceptionally, showcasing the thought that has gone into design as well as functionality.  Useable roof rails with a 50kg load rating and the shark fin antenna add to the exterior persona.  From a design standpoint this compact SUV looks like the complete package.

The cabin is well appointed for an entry level SUV

The cabin of the Kiger offers comfortable seating for 5 people (even if you are above average in height).  This is a welcome surprise.  The roof line ensures that there is enough headroom even for a tall rear passenger, which adds to the overall ergonomics of this vehicle. With a 405 liter boot that can easily accommodate 2 large suitcases along with a small carry on very comfortably, the Kiger has really been thought through.  The interior features get an additional thumbs up with a comfortably placed infotainment system, temperature dials and AC blower controls.  What really stands out here is the fact that all the dials have intuitively placed digital screens which have clear displays for all the air-conditioning functions.

A neat touchscreen and a nice Arkamys sound system make its way on the Kiger

The Arkamys audio system with 8 speakers on board with the top trim level of the Kiger had good sound and the volume adjust function as the car drove at higher speeds worked quite well.  With enough audio controls for bass and treble available in the infotainment system, curating the sound for the individual is quite easily done.  Adding to a long list of interior highlights was the fantastic storage space between the driver and front passenger, as well as the well-placed door storage.  The optional wireless charging tray is also available for those who are looking for this all important feature.  Overall the interiors and features were ergonomically friendly, well positioned, easy to access.

The 1.0 litre turbo engine is rather potent

Coming to the really fun part; driving the Renault Kiger was surprisingly enjoyable.  The 3-cylinder turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine delivers a 100 PS of power and 160 Nm of torque. Rev the engine a bit and it is quite easy to do a peel out!

Renault Kiger
Undoubtedly fun to drive!

The Kiger is quick, has a very responsive engine mated to an easy shift 5 speed manual gear box.  Do remember that there is CVT version available as well for those who enjoy the convenience of an automatic.  With three drive modes: Eco, Normal and Sports, easily accessible through a dial next to the gear lever; the driver can optimise performance based on driving conditions.  Each driving mode changes the steering input, permitting the driver to exert the right amount of control over the vehicle.

The Renault Kiger tackles terrain with ease.  We spent the day driving on gravel, sand, loose mud, hilly roads, and highway tarmac and it handled all with confidence.  The 205 mm ground clearance was a blessing on some of the terrain and ensured that there was no bottoming out.

With the interior features, exterior looks, and driving capability that the Renault Kiger is loaded with, the Rupees 5.45-9.72 lakh price range looks like a steal.  This compact SUV is going to be a tough product to beat in the B-segment market.
