6 drug peddlers arrested; huge quantity of contraband recovered in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 1 (UNI) Police on Monday arrested six drug peddlers, including five residents of Punjab, and recovered huge quality of contraband from them in different places in south Kashmir.

A police spokesperson said a police team during routine patrolling intercepted two drug peddlers at Devsar in south Kashmir district of Kulgam. “During checking, police recovered 18 kgs of poppy straw from them” he said.

He said two drug peddlers, identified as Haziq Rather and Jatinder Singh, a resident of Khurad Gurdaspur in Punjab, were immediately taken into custody.

He said following specific information, a checkpoint was established near Nippora crossing in Kulgam. “During checking, police interpreted a vehicle and recovered 40 Kgs of Poppy Straw concealed in three bags,” he said.

He said the accused, identified as Ravipal and Sukhwinder Kumar, both residents of Chogawan Jalandar in Punjab, Gurvinder Singh, resident of Godawali Jalandar and Reshpal Singh, resident of Kud Patnitop, were immediately taken into custody.

He said Pulwama police received information that a person, identified as Younis Ahmad Wani has stored a huge quantity of cannabis powder in his cow shed at Bhatpora Naina. “Acting swiftly, police party raided the cow shed and recovered 30 Kgs of cannabis concealed in six bags. However, the accused person is at large and efforts are on to effect his arrest,” he said.

He said cases have been registered in respective police stations. “Community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood. People found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law,” he said.

“Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace as reiterated in our community meetings,” he added.
