Human Skull Found in Georgia, Prompting Police Dog Search for More Remains

A human skull found in Columbus, Georgia, on Sunday night, has prompted a police dog search for more remains.

The skeletal remains were discovered in the 6000 block of Veterans Parkway and taken to the Columbus morgue.

The skull was returned to the scene where the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will use search dogs in the hope of finding more remains, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan told Newsweek.

The renewed search was set to begin again at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Last week, the remains of a human skull were found by a passerby walking through a park 25 miles northwest of Houston, Texas.

Officers from Harris County were called to the scene of a wooded area in the 12900 block of North Eldridge Parkway, on Sunday, February 21.

"The remains of a human skull were observed by an individual walking in Cypress Park," Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

A park patron made the grim discovery around noon in a wooded area away from park amenities.

An investigation was launched with Harris County Sheriff's Office crime scene investigators and forensic anthropologists with the Institute of Forensic Science (IFS) to find all the bones from the wooded area and to determine the identity of the skeletal remains and a cause of death.

Earlier this month, human remains were discovered by unsuspecting hikers along a trail in Santee in San Diego County, California.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation after the remains were found on February 3.

The department said in a statement: "On February 3, 2021, just after 4:00 p.m., Sheriff's deputies responded to the 11000 block of Summit Avenue in the city of Santee for found human remains. The remains were found by hikers on a trail nearby.

"The Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and has assumed responsibility of the investigation. The Homicide Unit will coordinate with the Medical Examiner's Office who will ultimately be responsible for identifying the remains and determining cause and manner of death."

Days later, the body of an unidentified adult man was found floating in a pond at a Colorado golf course on the afternoon of February 7.

In December, human remains were found in two suitcases left on the side of a road in Denver.

The discovery was made by Denver Parks and Recreation workers who were in the middle of plowing snow from the sidewalk along the Sanderson Gulch Trail in the southwest of the city when they came across across the abandoned suitcases.

The workers saw what they believed to be body parts inside and alerted authorities. Members of the Denver Police Department's homicide unit, the medical examiner's office and the crime lab unit arrived at the scene at the 1700 block of South Java Way in the Mar Lee neighborhood.

The remains were later confirmed to be that of a "recently deceased adult white male," Clark said, citing the Office of the Medical Examiner. The case is being treated as a homicide.

In the same week, the remains of a young girl were unearthed in woodland in Oregon.

The child is believed to have been between 6.5 and 10 years old when she died. Her body was found near a rest stop in a heavily wooded area in Lincoln County.
