Drive-by pool hall shooting leaves father dead, one in hospital

A drive-by shooting outside a pool hall in Melbourne’s outer west has left a father dead and another man seriously injured.

A number of shots were fired from a moving vehicle outside the All Star Lounge on Westwood Drive in Ravenhall about midnight on Saturday, police said.

Homicide Squad detectives and local police were at the scene on Sunday and had cordoned off the area.

The deceased man, a 33-year-old father from Deer Park, was shot in the upper body and rushed to hospital by friends and family but did not survive.

The other man, a 24-year-old, was seriously injured with a gunshot wound in his lower body. He was taken by emergency services to hospital and remains in a serious condition.

Police don’t yet know if the men knew each other, and whether the deceased man was targeted.

“There’s nothing to suggest if that was the case,” Victoria Police Detective Sergeant Simon Quinnell said.

“We’ve looked into the deceased’s criminal background - very little is there, and certainly nothing to suggest anything that he has been involved in.

“This is a family man.”

Detective Sergeant Quinnell said the family have been informed.

“The family are upset and finding it difficult to explain why a night has ended in such a tragedy,” Detective Sergeant Quinnell said.

Police said a total of four shots were fired from a car which contained two men, and that they did not have “solid information” on the appearance of the gunman.

The pool hall and hookah bar sits in an industrial area next to a Ravenhall hire car company and mechanic, and across the road from a funeral home.

Police have cordoned off the area about 300 metres from the exterior of the pool hall.

In an unrelated shooting on Rebecca Drive in Ravenhall, just one street over, in December, a Melbourne grandfather allegedly shot a man in the arm following a long-running dispute over rubbish dumping.

Police are requesting local businesses in the area to come forward if they have CCTV or any other information. Their investigation into the incident is ongoing.
